Save yourself from spinal/back surgery

This post goes out to all you people who are suffering from insane back aches/know people who are in pain from having slipped discs/back problems/lower back pain. I know the discomfort you’re going through and how much it interferes with your life, trust me , I do.

I never ever thought that this would ever happen to me cos I’m only 26 years old but it did one fine day and it changed my life progressively for a good 6 months.

Over the last 6 months. I’ve seen at least 5  different doctors , 3 different chiropractors, went for sports massages, physiotherapy, tried swimming, watched countless of YouTube videos for slipped disc stretches and exercises and even a Chinese sinseh but with each passing day my conditioned worsened.

I was left with the final option of going for surgery for my lower back which itself carries plenty of surgical risks as well as the fact that it doesn’t cure my disc problems, it just cuts off the protruding disc and that leaves me with whatever that is left which will affect me in old age.

So today, I’m really happy to be able to share with you the good news that after looking around for so long. I’ve found out that there’s a way to fix my back. Not just patch through surgery but by using a machine that stretches the vertebrates in my back to allow the disc & nutrients to gradually slip back into place. Thus  healing it completely WITHOUT surgery.

do you know that lower back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide according to the Global Burden of Disease 2010? Back pain is also one of the most common reasons for missed work.  In fact, back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, outnumbered only by upper-respiratory infections.

Back in later march 15, I was sent to Penang with mediacorp to film one of their dramas and during one of the scenes which I was supposed to do a stunt for . I felt an intense pull in my lower back, it was a dull warm ache then and I thought it was just probably work stress. The days went by and the pain got worse and worse.

I struggled and soldiered on for another 6 days or so in Penang , trying desperately to finish my filming and masking the pain. I wanted to be professional and you know, being typical Singaporean I’m like (if I complain about my pain, that’s it I’m not going to score myself another gig with them ever again kinda mentality)

on one of my off-days there,  I went to see a GP in penang who referred me to an MRI clinic.

(btw, an MRI scan  in a PRIVATE clinic there costs about 798RM [approx SGD300 then] , a one way ticket to Penang costs about $49 via airasia. An MRI in singapore in a govt hospital after a polyclinic referral starts FROM SGD 800. You do the math.)

After waiting for just about a day, I got my results which confirmed my suspicion. I had a tear in one of my lower back disc and the one above it had slipped slightly out-of-place. The doctor gave me some meds and told me that it should heal within 2 to 3 months but boy was he wrong.

I took the next flight back to Singapore and saw a doctor who immediately gave me 12 days of MC (you know how hard it is to get 2 days MC and I got 12 so that struck another ‘ohshit’ chord in me)

As the days progressed. I was reduced to using a walking stick for my own church wedding rehearsal

and one fine night it got so bad just 6 days before the wedding. I could not even lie/sit down/walk/cough without wincing in pain and that led me straight to the A&E unit at changi general hospital.

I was given a strong jab that left me giggling to myself and more pain meds. The pain meds helped me a lot to get through my wedding and honeymoon with the assistance of a half steel lumbar support back-brace.

To cut an immensely painful long story short. I was living a nightmare.  I could have easily passed off as a drug addict for my wedding based on the number of painkillers I kept popping.

When I was just about to give up hope, my wife, Sarah, did some research online and found me several chiropractors to visit & try out.

To be honest, I was doubtful.  I visited a young chiro doctor who owned a practice in lucky plaza. It was a decent looking clinic but it was clear he was as fresh as a daisy. I told him I’m aware of what my issue is but he insisted on going on and on about how does a person’s spine work and what happens in old age rambling on and on from what I’m pretty sure was memory work from this medical textbooks.

after adding insult to injury, he proceeded to do some ‘adjustments’ on my spine which left me in more pain.  I knew I shouldn’t have let him do any kind of work on me but at that stage trust me. I was desperate for solutions.

I went home and was just about to give up and arrange for surgery when Sarah asked me to try just one more time at another chiropractor.

When I first met Dr. Dylan from Concierge chiropractic & Rehabilitation . we shared a connection.  He didn’t mention a word about money (his receptionist did when i paid the bill) hahah! #lamedadjokemoment .

He looked through my MRI as well as the records from other doctors and he instantly knew what was wrong. he was the ONLY doctor who told me that he was absolutely confident of treating me and with success . Every other doctor I saw told me that its hard to say/go for surgery/take pain meds and see how?

But Dr. Dylan knew what was wrong instantly and recommended that I use this machine (so far from what I know, his clinic is the only place in Singapore that has a non surgical zero gravity spinal decompression machine)  This machine specifically attempts to reduce disc herniation/bulges, and rehydrate/repair degenerated disc. It has proven effective for up to 88.9% of patients as reported by a recent Mayo Clinic study.

This machine treats patients who has the following symptoms

    • Herniated  Discs
    • Bulging Discs
    • Pinched Nerve
    • Sciatica (leg pain)
    • Degenerative Disc Disease
    • Spinal Stenosis
    • Post-Surgical Pain

how it works is that a clinical assistant/doctor will strap you to the machine and it induces traction to your spine disc , creating a zero gravity environment or negative pressure, allowing for your vertebrata to pull open slightly and allow the ‘slipped’ disc to gradually slip back into place.

I am always very well taken care of at Dr.Dylan’s  office and have made such good friends with the clinical assistant there , suzy 🙂  She always fluffs up the pillow for me and makes sure I’m comfortable all the time.

As you can see, it’s not a scary procedure at all. In fact. It’s usually over in a jiffy and my spine always feel so loose and fragile after a session but I can feel that the pain had been reduced each time. So far I’ve got to say, I’m really amazed.

I’ve been for about 20 sessions &  so far each time my back gets better and better.

The first 5 sessions or so , I’d take a cab to and fro their clinic in orchard road even though it’s so close to the mrt cos I really couldn’t even stand up/sit down for longer than 10 to 15 minutes without feeling pain.  But from 6th to 7th session onwards, I noticed drastic improvements and started being able to take the train down .

Throughout my treatment I would experience peaks and valleys of pain and comfort but I’m really happy to announce that I’m finally able to do things that I’ve not been able to do in 6 months.

One only begins to appreciate even the littlest of things from the moment they are taken away

I can sit down and write. I can bend down and pick up stuff. I don’t take 15 minutes just to wear my shoes or put on my pants and as of last week, I could enjoy a very simple game of badminton and all this without any pain meds.

that is pure joy I tell you.

I’m happy to share this information with all my readers because everyone suffers from back pain. maybe not as intense or nightmarish as me. But in my personal opinion, before you let what I’d love to call ‘scalpel-happy Singapore surgeons’ cut into your spine, try this one out and save yourself a ton of money , pain and risks.  I’m still going through the treatment btw as the doc recommends 25 sessions.

Now an important question that you’re probably thinking about right now is:

How much is this going to cost me?

Initial consultation costs $150 for Chiro &  each session of the spinal decompression costs $250

Treatment plans are available which will be more cost-saving. Starting from 10 sessions at $1200.

It helps if you have health/work insurance but If without it that sounds expensive then think about how much would surgery have cost you not just financially but on your overall health. DSC_8471

I’m looking forward to the next phrase of my treatment which involves me using various equipment here at the clinic to rehabilitate and strengthen my spinal muscles

I’m not getting paid for writing this but these guys have literally helped me through one of the darkest periods of my life and I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart. I find it irksome that people don’t know that there is an alternative to curing slipped disc apart from surgery. I was initially doubtful but having been there and done that, I would have it no other way folks.

Throughout my National service, how many soldiers do you know who have slipped disc issues and got themselves downgraded? I myself got downgraded to a PES c9 because of this. much less them when they are only 18 years old. So spread the word and share with your family and friends whom you know are having spine problems and get yourself checked out here:
